I joined Shrewton Silver Band in 1992 although I did pop off for a while in 1997 but returned some years later.
Early Years
I started playing trumpet at aged 11 when I first went to senior school. If you played in the school band you had a seat to sit on in assembly, if you didn’t you had to sit on the floor. Joining the band seem a really smart thing to do at the time……..!
Previous Bands

As an extension to the school band, a few of us started a rock band securing performances on a Saturday morning in the local cinema before the film started.  The ITV television series Magpie was running a song writing competition and we were selected and performed at the television studios in Norwich only to be foxed by the forthcoming budget statement which saw that Magpie programme not going out …damn, claim to fame lost! However, our lead guitarist went on to play with Mungo Jerry, and the other trumpet player joined the Blues and Royals as an Army musician. So, fast forward……..other bands include:

  • Colchester Silver Band (now Hatfields of Colchester)
  • Colchester Youth Orchestra
  • Alresford Silver Band
  • Band of the Army Air Corps (V)
  • Shrewton Silver Band
  • Test Valley Brass (Mitutoyo)
  • Phoenix (Crewkerne)
  • Woodfalls Concert Band
  • Plus…. helping out lots of other bands over the years..
Favourite Music
I like quite a lot, but favourites are probably Isaiah 40 and Harrison’s Dream.
Other Stuff…
An ex crown servant now in semi-retirement (I think!) and still trying to stop oil leaks on my 54 year old Triumph motorbike! In terms of banding, highlights include winning the National finals in 1998 and again in 1999, but couldn’t quite make three in a row, however playing at the National finals in the Royal Albert Hall in 2000 was still very special.
